Engaging Special Needs Scavenger Hunt Expressive Language Activity

It is imporant to consistently work on expressive language with special needs children. This scavenger hunt will get the students moving to find hidden shapes with letters that spell their name. First, give each student a clipboard with the shapes and letters that they need to find. Next, hide the shapes with letters. Once the student finds a letter, they must decide whether or not they need it to spell their name. If they need it they hold on to it and keep moving on to find more shapes with letters. If they do not need it, they leave it. After each student finds all the letters that spell their name, they return to their table and sequence them in order. Next, have them glue the letters on a sheet of paper. Finally, give each student an opportunity to describe the color, shape and letter that they found. Another variation is to put the shapes and letters inside plastic eggs for more fun language.

Now is the time to model language. Give the students a starter sentence. For example, I found the ____________ with letter __. Your student will fill in the blanks to make a complete sentence. I found the blue hexagon with the letter J. When finished modeling the language, ask each student to describe the shape and letters that they found.
